The Atlantik Wall In Normandy

Bordeaux

The German Navy quickly took over the port at the fall of France and very early on decided to house submarines here. From the beginning it was a shared base with the Italians, Their 11th Italian Flotilla being based here. The main pens were not finally completed until September of 1943. The port here had the disadvantage of being a long way from the sea. U-boats had to travel 80 Kilometres to travel up the Gironde River to get to the open sea.  At the mouth of the Gironde they had to tie up to an open jetty and take on more fuel, Before heading into the Atlantic.
