The Atlantik Wall In Normandy

Brest

Because of its westerly position this was an obvious site for a U-Boat base. The harbour taken over by the Kriegsmarine shortly after the fall of France in 1940.

The length of the bunker is over 300 meters and it is nearly 200 meters wide and almost 18 meters high. It could house 15 U-boats. Like most of the pens it was equipped with anti-aircraft guns on the roof, which were nearly 8 meters thick.

Bombed on several occasions by both the R.A.F. & U.S.A.F it was not until the advent of Tallboy bombs that any significant damage was done

The site is still in the hands of the French Navy, who do organise visits on some days during the summer
