The Atlantik Wall In Normandy

Le Brouley Map 1210E

A wonderful story is told about this site. As part of the landward fortification to the south of Cherbourg a ring of casemates usually type R630 were planned. A local General thought that his troops returning from the Russian front would be better served with a swimming pool. He diverted the materials and manpower from the casemate construction and this resulted in the swimming pool. There are even diving platforms at each end. The locals say the pool was never used too much as the source of the water a local spring was too cold.

On the road leading to the pool there is a sentry box of pre cast concrete. These were once numerous in Normandy, but now not many survive. It is dated as being be cast in 1942.
