The Atlantik Wall In Normandy

WN63 Omaha Beach  Map 1412OT

WN63 was purely an underground control post for the control of the positions WN59 to WN 63. It was designated as a "Funkstation" Radio Station.

The one strange feature was that its signals to and from WN62 were by optical radio which meant that the radio beam was transmitted down a light beam. This system I believe was also being installed at Pointe du Hoc. The system relied on line of sight and possibly had problems when the battle started as debris, smoke and dust must have played havoc with signals. The transmitter bunker can still be found at WN62.

I have never been able to get inside the underground bunker and the interior pictures come from a similar bunker near Cherbourg.
