WN65 Omaha Beach Map 1412OT
La Vallee du Ruquet is situated in the centre of Omaha beach and the main
armament of WN65 was a 50 mm cannon housed in a type H667 casemate that was only
completed in late April 1944.
Also installed here were two mortars housed in Tobruks, and covering the road
further up the hill was an old 75 mm gun hidden in the woods.
The casemate is the centrepiece of many photos taken late on D-day and
subsequent days.
This was the first draw to be
cleared on D-day. The massacre of German troops who surrendered on D-day and
depicted in the films "The Longest Day" and "The Saving Of Private Ryan" took
place behind this bunker.
