The Atlantik Wall In Normandy

WN73 The Fortified House Map 1412OT

The German Position known as the "Fortified House" was to cause the American National Guard most of its problems on the morning of D-day.  The three Mortars placed high on the cliffs were almost impossible to destroy, because they simply could not been seen by the attacking forces. The casemate half way up the hill had the dubious honour of housing the oldest gun in use on D-day. It housed a 75mm cannon made by the French in 1897 and was one of the first generation of breech loading cannons.
